When do you need a deep cleaning?
You would need a deep cleaning when:
You have calculus buildup below your gum line.
You have deep pockets in your gums that trap bacteria
You have bone loss- meaning bacteria eating away your bone that is holding your teeth in place (periodontal disease)
A scaling and root planing helps remove bacteria below the gum line that is causing the periodontal disease.
Common Questions about Dental Cleanings
Question: I was told I need to floss every day but my gums always bleed when I floss. What should I do?
Answer: Your gums are bleeding because of gingivitis (inflammation in the gums). Flossing and brushing the gum line twice a day will help relieve the inflammation and gums will eventually stop bleeding when they are back to health.
Question: Why do I need a deep cleaning? I just want the regular free cleaning.
Answer: In cases of periodontal disease (inflammation of the gums with loss of bone holding your teeth in place) a deep cleaning is necessary. If it is refused, there is a high chance of losing teeth due to continuation of inflammation and bone loss.
